• In Salon, Michelle Goldberg has an excellent and sort of alarming interview with the graphic memoirist Marjane Satrapi, who lived through the Iranian revolution and its aftermath when she was a child growing up in that country. Says Satrapi: “If I have one message to give to the secular American people, it’s that the world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don’t know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you. And our governments are very much the same.”
• I am totally going to order all of these TV Carnage DVDs. I didn’t know about TV Carnage until I read Matt Haber’s article about it in Sunday’s New York Times. TV Carnage sounds very Media Shower-ish, so of course I will probably watch the DVDs over and over and over again…
• Late-’70s heartthrob Rex Smith is now a Realtor. His slogan: “Results That ‘Take Your Breath Away.’” I totally remember watching the 1979 TV movie Sooner or Later when it was originally broadcast.
• “In 1982, three kids from Mississippi set out to create a shot-for-shot remake of Raiders of the Lost Ark and ended up making history.” Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation was screened at the Brooklyn Underground Film Festival this weekend, and man, I wish I’d been able to see it.
• A complete bootleg of Radiohead’s show in Berlin, Germany, on September 11, 2001. Lots of other good music downloads on that site, too.
• In case you missed it, Matt Taibbi of The New York Press wrote a devastating review of Thomas Friedman’s new book, The World Is Flat. The book’s governing metaphor is hopelessly misguided, Taibbi writes: “The significance of Columbus’s discovery was that on a round earth, humanity is more interconnected than on a flat one. On a round earth, the two most distant points are closer together than they are on a flat earth. But Friedman is going to spend the next 470 pages turning the ‘flat world’ into a metaphor for global interconnectedness. Furthermore, he is specifically going to use the word round to describe the old, geographically isolated, unconnected world.”
